What is the difference between the concepts of ego and the self? Philosophers often use them interchangeably, but they don't seem to mean the same thing to me.

The distinction between the two is not obvious to me. They're often used interchangeably in philosophy, and they both describe aspects of a person, but there seems to be some distinction.<br><br>For example, I may be able to imagine an alternate me as a different profession, but can I imagine a different ego?
