I am Chinese, living in southern China. I heard that the Taiping Rebellion was a civil war that lasted for 14 years, from 1850 to 1864, started by some people who believed that they were chosen by God to overthrow the Qing, and that it caused 20 million people to die, but I do not know what the people who lived during that time period thought of the situation. The history books and documentaries are often very one-sided, only giving a very simplistic, black-and-white narrative of history that is often dictated by the government, which is extremely biased and not entirely accurate.

What did ordinary Chinese citizens think about the Taiping Rebels, did they support the Taiping or the Qing? Or did they just not care about either side?

Did the Chinese people view the Taiping Rebels as Chinese, or did the Chinese view the Taiping as some foreign entities?

I have heard that initially, the Qing was very weak during the early stages of the rebellion, but that the Qing got stronger and managed to defeat the Taipings with the help of the foreigners.
