The creepy man in my Airbnb

This happened in spring 2023. I won't mention the country in which this happened as it's fairly obvious if you know a bit about geography. I'm a 19 yo female university student and I went alone to an European country for a semester to study at a university. I arrived at the end of Janurary and was looking for a place to stay in the meantime. I found a guy who offered a couch in his apartment for a week, and I decided to take it as I was tired and desperate, and it was only for a week.<br><br>I arrived at the apartment at night and after a while we went to bed. I was sleeping on the couch, and he had a bedroom with a door. The next morning I woke up and the man was in the kitchen making breakfast. I came to the kitchen and greeted him, and he said "oh, you're still here?" in a weird tone. I wondered if he was joking, but he seemed serious, so I asked "weren't you the guy I met last night? You said I could stay here for a week." He looked confused, stared at me for a while and said "I'm not the guy you met last night. I don't know who that was." and showed me a key. He said he lived in this apartment alone and he didn't have any guests the previous night.<br><br>I was shocked and felt sick. I didn't know what to say. I told him "ok, thank you" and left the apartment, without any idea what just happened and who that man was. After that I felt really uneasy and unsafe. I had been alone in that man's apartment the whole night, and who knows what would have happened if the real inhabitant showed up in the middle of the night? I'm just glad I got out unscathed.<br><br>&#x200B;<br><br>EDIT: For those who asked, we didn't have any meetings beforehand or video calls to check his identity. I arrived in a country I didn't know, without a place to stay, and was tired after 24h of traveling. It was a stupid decision to trust him that much. Now I would never do anything like this again.<br><br>I'm really thankful for all of the kind comments and direct messages. You're all very nice :)
