We live in a house, in a pretty sketchy neighborhood on the outskirts of Tokyo. We have a pretty hard to open bathroom window but it’s enough to see some random strangers hanging out around our house.

We live in a small neighborhood with around a dozen houses, so it’s pretty noticeable when someone strange is lurking around. The houses are also packed pretty close together, in Tokyo, I didn’t notice this much when I was a child but since I moved to the US for college, I can’t help but notice how cramp and claustrophobic everything feels in my hometown.

The houses are so close that our neighbors could literally (and have) lean into our windows to take a look around.

One night when I was home alone, I remember it was in the middle of the winter but it was really hot (I think my mom had forgotten to turn off the heater) and I was sweating while laying in bed.

Around midnight I hear knocking on the bathroom window. I knew it couldn’t be my parents because they would have yelled or texted me to let them in.

I immediately knew it was someone from the neighborhood working with the theif that had been around, and had been casing our house for months.

The knocking was slow and in long intervals, (like every minute or so) and was not consistent. I knew then that it was someone trying to get me to open the door, thinking it was my dad.

I didn’t know what to do, but something told me to stay calm. I never made a noise, and I locked all of the doors and windows. The knocking just continued. Soon it sounded like the person had put there elbow against the window and was just tapping their fingers.

I couldn’t sleep and was sitting up in bed, eyeing the doors until I fell asleep. And when I woke up the next morning, I told my parents.

They said that during the winter months, the cold weather made all of our doors and windows a bit more difficult to open.

But never try to mess with a house you don’t know. The family living there might have been messing with the doors and windows to make them stronger.
