This is mostly written from the perspective of a resident of the Middle East (Israeli to be more specific). I am well aware the sentiment this post is expressing is not rare but I hope the perspective of someone who actually lives next to Iran might be of interest.

Iran is a uniquely terrible state in a region with more than its fair share of uniquely terrible nations. No other country in the world has the unique blend of democracy and theocracy, is the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism, yet still gets treated as a normal member of international society.

Moreover - Iran is uniquely positioned in its ability to destabilize the Middle East. Through its direct patronage of the Lebanese Hizbollah and the Gaza Strip factions it has the ability to initiate large scale conflict with a (more or less) democratic nation (Israel). The Gulf states are occupied with the war in Yemen and do not have the ability to initiate a direct military confrontation with Iran. But Iran does have the ability to initiate a direct confrontation with Israel, and through its proxies in Syria and Iraq it may have the ability to initiate a confrontation with those nations as well.

Iran's ability to destabilize the Middle East is a well established fact, that is the whole reason why oil prices are so sensitive to the news related to Iran. Its ability to destabilize the Middle East is a uniquely destabilizing influence on world affairs. Uniquely among the nations of the world, it has the ability to start a large scale conflict with the only real democracy in the region and the only one that has nuclear capabilities. That is uniquely destabilizing because Iran's theocratic regime is uniquely apathetic to its own civilian casualties, uniquely contemptuous of the institutions of civil society and uniquely willing to do absolutely everything in its power to spread its unique brand of theocracy. Its direct influence over a uniquely large area is as clear as it is uniquely pernicious, and the Middle East does not need any more uniquely destabilizing influences. It uniquely has the ability to influence uniquely destabilizing terror organizations in Palestine, the Lebanon, Iraq and even the uniquely unstable U.S puppet state in Afghanistan. The ability of Iran, a uniquely theocratic regime, to influence uniquely destabilizing influences in the Middle East and the world, is uniquely destabilizing to the world and uniquely pernicious to civil society in the Middle East. And it is uniquely positioned in its ability to influence uniquely destabilizing influences within the uniquely fragile oil producing states of the Persian Gulf, and has uniquely destabilizing influence over uniquely unstable areas that are uniquely susceptible to Iranian influence.

I am not advocating the invasion of Iran or calling for the U.S/Israel to initiate a war with Iran. However I think we should all be more sympathetic to the idea of regime change in Iran. I think the idea of regime change in Iran is uniquely justified.
