I lied about being a student at a local university in order to attract a tenant to the other room I was renting out. The ad I posted contained several details about myself and my room - including other universities in the area where I supposedly attend class. Then I copied and pasted my ad to relevant chambers and student groups so that if someone was interested in renting, they would think I'm a local student too and thus a trustworthy person.

Edit: I'm a single mother and I got my act together after years of relying on government assistance. I was able to get a good job, a nice place to live, *and save up for a security deposit and first+last for a new place*, all while attending college and raising a baby by myself. I was actually able to move into a better and larger place than my previous apartment right at the beginning of the pandemic, which was incredibly lucky for my son and I. My only problem was I couldn't afford to pay rent by myself.

This was a top floor apartment with a tall ceiling, massive windows, and hardwood floors, so I decided to rent out the spare room. I had several parties interested in the room, all of whom messaged me and asked if the ad was legitimate and asked for proof of identity and pictures to verify. So I did the sensible thing and stole someone else's identity to prove that I'm a reliable person.

I found a fake student ID on google, added the name of the university where I actually do go to school, and sent it to everyone who asked me to prove that I wasn't a serial killer. Sure enough, it worked like a charm, and soon enough I had several people lined up to see the room. I showed the room to each of them, took their application, and finally settled on a young woman right around my age. She was very quiet and very friendly, and had recently broken up with her boyfriend and was looking for somewhere new to live.

Fast forward to the pandemic. My tenant was one of the essential workers who continued to work her 50+ hour weeks while I got to stay at home with my 2 year old. I'm grateful every day for her tenacity and perseverance, and I made sure to express my gratitude by being the best landlord ever. When rent was late I didn't send her threatening messages; when she returned from a long day at work I made sure to leave a frozen meal in the fridge so that all she had to do was reheat it and eat. When the news said that there was a national shortage on clorox wipes, I went to every store in town and bought every pack of clorox wipes and left them all in her room. She didn't have to worry about doing any of the cleaning or cooking or chores because I did it all for her. I was in the perfect position to help her because my student loans were being forgiven and I got a stimulus check.

I feel guilty because she has been through so much hardship and I feel like I lied to her or misled her in some way. But I'm grateful for the pandemic, because I got to repay her tenacity and dedication to her job by dropping off care packages and making her dinner and cleaning the house and doing the laundry and taking out the trash and buying her groceries.

Edit because it *was* bullshit: I know that I didn't have to lie and I'm not condoning or making excuses for my behavior.
