The old "sink or swim" approach to storytelling desperately needs revitalization.

I've been growing more and more tired and annoyed by anime that just drops viewers into the middle of the world's lore and then just expects us to seemingly piece together what's happening ourselves. Not only that, but more often than not, those same anime even refuse to explain anything because they treat their audience like we're idiots. Literally to the point where I've seen some anime flat out refuse to explain anything for fear of being too "hand-holdy", leading to the anime being incredibly confusing for viewers. I've seen plenty of anime just literally leave plot holes and loose ends open for no reason other than "we can't explain it or else the viewers will find it boring".

I feel like anime has been leaning more and more into the idea that just because an anime does something different from the norm, that it's automatically better because it's more mature or something. I feel like that's an incredibly unspoken double standard that anime fans rarely talk about. When video games do that, everyone shits on them, and TV shows also get frowned upon for that, but somehow anime is always excluded from the criticism.
