The quality of products designed for small children is negatively impacted by the fact that they primarily buy with emotions, rather than reason, and are willing to pay a premium for merchandise.

Parents don't want to disappoint their kids, and businesses take advantage of that. Kid's products, toys, clothes, shoes, etc. are more expensive, and less durable, than their adult counterparts, because they can be. Why would Fisher Price pay to have their plastic toys last longer than a year, when they can pay to have them made cheaply, and then have parents buy them another one? Why would DC shoes pay to have expensive, durable materials used to make their kid's shoes, when they can pay to have them made cheaply, and then have parents buy them another pair when they break after a year?

I can't help but feel that if kids weren't so influenced by advertising and brand names, businesses would be more interested in building up a reputation for quality, rather than one for branding.

EDIT: Because orders are important, this is for products where non-merchandised versions are sold to adults. For example, a kid's car seat made by a company that also makes a similar car seat for pets is not a good counterpoint. I understand the need for safety regulations, but a booster seat for a baby should not be held to the same safety standards as one made for a dog.
