The Western Roman Empire was an ancient Roman State that, in its latest form, survived from the end of the 5th to the mid 5th centuary. It was a post imperial devolution that, even at its height, never managed to achieve stability. In fact, it never managed to get itself out of the rut that the crisis of the 3rd century left it in. Its collapse was the culmination of many centuries of problems, both internal and external. The last gasp of the Western Empire was the death of the institution in Europe that was first set up over 700 years before Jesus Christ had even set foot on earth.

We know that the Western Roman Empire collapsed, as it did in 476 AD with the deposition of Romulus Augustus. But what was the fall of the Western Roman Empire like? What were its final years like?
