So this happened in the 90s when I was in my early 20s. I had moved to a new city for university and was in need of a little more cash for the time being. So I joined a bunch of local groups in an attempt to find some odd jobs.

One was a general buy and sell groups, it was pretty standard- people buying and selling various items and services. Trading back and forth. I saw an add stating “very kind man looking for someone to dog sit our dear dog for the weekend, we have a family emergency that we need to attend to. Please apply within. 1000 dollars a weekend.”

I thought that was a pretty weird add, but at the time I was like hey free money. I had the weekend free and was in need of a bit of cash. I had no clue what made them need someone so bad they were willing to pay a stranger 1000 dollars.

I applied and waited to hear back.

The next day I received a phone call from some guy named Rick that said he was the guy who posted the add and that he was looking for someone right away. I agreed and we set up a time to meet and he would show me the house give me the money and leave.

At the time I lived in a dorm, so I met him in the lobby. He was a tall guy. Skinny. Pretty short “in the front” blond hair. He looked like he was 35 or so. After we were done talking he said he wanted to check out my dorm room. (My dorm room? I thought this was odd, but he was paying me a lot of money so I said sure. )

We took the elevator up to my floor ( I lived on floor 4 ) and walked to my room. I opened the door. And he looked around. He then asked if he could look in my roommate’s room. I asked why and he said he was just making sure I didn’t have some guys staying there and that we were not going to use his house as some party pad.

I told him that it was my roommate’s personal space, and no he could not go in. He seemed to be took off guard by this. He then asked if I was sure I wanted to do this job (it was at this point I started to get this weird vibe I can’t describe but you will see what I mean in a min ) I was starting to feel uncomfortable at this point, but I was also still a dumb college kid and that money was a lot.

He told me to meet him at the address and time he wrote down on a piece of paper and left.

A couple days went by and it was time. I got into my car and plugged in the address. It was on the other side of town so it took awhile to get there. I pulled up to the house. It was something like you see in the movies. This multi million dollar house that looked like it belonged to a rich family not someone looking to hire a dog sitter.

There was a guy at the door. He let me in and I walked into the living room.

There was 2 people. Both older, in their 50s I assume- they both just stared at me. Like they had never seen a girl before. I tried to break the awkwardness and said hi. They just stared.

Rick walked into the room with a smile on his face. This is where it started to get weird.

Rick introduced me to everybody, and told me “I hope you don’t mind” but he had a couple of his friends come meet me. I was like ok. Then I noticed that his friends were in the kitchen but he pointed behind me. I turned around and there was a couple people in the living room. I would guess at least 10 people all staring at me. I tried to say hi but everyone just kept staring.

They all seemed to be fixated on my hair. I had this pretty long red hair at the time. Pretty, flowy and down my back. I had it in a pony tail, so it was just down my back. Every time I moved my hair moved. They all seemed to be fixated on it.

At this point I was really getting weird vibes. So I tried to just get the information. I told Rick I would like the address of his family emergency and the money please. I also asked for some food and told him I would like to see the dog before he left.

There was a lot of mumbling. And the lady screamed. I think she said something like “there is no emergency!” At this point. I didn’t care how much money it was. I was going to get out of there.

I turned around and started walking towards the door. I was about half way there when I heard a man behind me say “stop” in this deep voice.

I turned around (and I can’t explain this) but everyone was standing up. I no idea how they all stood up so fast. And they took up almost the whole room. I was almost to the door when I heard the voice again. “Stop”.

I turned around again, and it was like they were closing in on me. I slowly started to walk backwards. They all started slowly walking towards me.

I turned around, opened the door and ran.

I jumped in my car and got the hell out of there. I didn’t stop driving until I was safe inside my dorm room. I shook like a leaf the whole night.

I never saw them again. Never heard anything from them. Never heard about them. It was like they never existed. Until I moved out of that dorm years later and my mom came to help me move and she asked if that was the dorm where I almost got kidnapped. I had totally forgotten about it. She told me that she remembered because it was one of the times that she was actually scared for me.
