CMV: The concept of "work-life balance" is an absurd one.

I've always thought that the concept of work-life balance is nonsensical because it's a balance between two sides that don't need to be balanced. I feel like this is a common sentiment I've seen in many places and I just want to discuss it and hear counterpoints.

First, I'd like to acknowledge that there is such a thing as burnout. It's the inability to cope with the stress that comes with your job, and can affect your life outside of work. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the idea that your work time and personal time need to be "balanced." I think this concept comes from the idea that people only have 24 hours in a day, and that's all they have to do stuff they need to do for work, stuff they need to do for personal time, and other stuff they want to do. And that's true, but I don't see why they have to be balanced. I feel like the idea that they have to be balanced is absurd.

I think that when you are working, you should be focused on your work. When you are not, you should be focused on your life. You don't need to have both going on at the same time. When you're working you should be thinking about work, not about the weekend. When you're on the weekend you should be thinking about the weekend, not about the next week's tasks. You shouldn't be thinking about your job at home, you shouldn't be thinking about your home at work.

I'm a little confused on how to explain this, I've just never seen how this idea of a work-life balance is a good thing. It feels like people are always looking to change something about their job or about their life. "This job is too stressful." "This relationship is too much work." I'm not saying that these things don't exist and are not true, but why not just accept that the situation is what it is and move on. I don't see how the concept of work-life balance is beneficial at all. I think it's just a bunch of people trying to get what they want without realizing it's not good for them.

I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.
