I have a 16 year old daughter. On the days when school is canceled, my husband and I make her go to the library to get some homework done if she has any. She's been using this time to also work on job applications to try and get a part time job so she can have extra money.

She's been asking us to buy into her the idea of going to prom. She would need a dress for that, which would be way out of her price range since she doesn't have a job yet, so she was hoping we could get her one. I agreed, but I told her I'd buy her a dress within reasonable price range, and that I wouldn't go overboard on it since prom isn't that big of a deal. She wanted a really expensive dress that was $1500, without the shoes and hair accessories. So I said no.

We went to the mall yesterday to buy a dress, and when we passed by the expensive brand dress shop, she wanted to go in just to look. So we went in and looked at the dresses. Some were really pretty, but they were so expensive. I told her she had to pick a dress that was more affordable, and it would be okay to get her shoes and hair accessories at a cheaper store since the dress was the main thing. So she picked this pretty red satin one that was $500. Still so overpriced but whatever.

On the way to the car, she said "Too bad dad isn't here right now". I asked what she meant, and she said that if her dad was here, he would have said yes to the $1500 dress. She said he would have also agreed that the other store has tacky dresses because they're cheaper so he would have said yes to getting her hair and shoes done at the more expensive store.

I asked her what made her think that? And she said "Uh, he's always the one who says yes to me". So I said "It's not the 1930s, so your dad is not my husband who I need his stamp of approval to do anything. I said no, so that means it's a no, and we're not asking your dad". Then she just got quiet.

When we got home, I told my husband what happened. He was upset that she would say that (he's been away on a work trip for the last week, and he's coming home tomorrow).
