My dad used to be a convenience store clerk when he was younger. He was the youngest in a large family of 6, and they lived in a bad area where crime was rampant. There were many times he had to deal with shoplifting and robbery, and it was only because he was so young that he didn't get hurt.

My dad told me a story about one of his co-workers who got into an argument with a customer about his $6 coffee. The guy had asked for extra milk and ice, but he only paid for a small coffee and hot. The employee had to make him a new drink, but when the customer tried to pay again for the extra ingredients, my dad's coworker said that he couldn't make him pay twice. My dad's coworker said that it was okay because the guy was obviously broke. He told the guy that he'd let him have the extra ingredients this time.

The next time the guy worked my dad's coworker, he had a $10 bill out, and he got his usual $4 drink with no extra milk and ice. He told my dad that the guy had a new drink made every time he went, but he paid with the extra $6. My dad said that was a nice thing to do, but his coworker said that he was just as guilty.

He told my dad that every time the customer tried to pay more, he refused to charge him. Instead, he gave him the extra milk and ice for free. He did that every time the guy came in, but he charged him $10 the one time he didn't try to get free stuff. The guy had the money to pay for it, so he wasn't hurting for cash. My dad's coworker said that it was better to be the guy who buys the expensive coffee, so he does have the money. He also said that the guy wasn't hurting his wallet.

When he was a teenager, he worked at a movie theater, and his friends would give him free movie tickets. They'd tell him to give his tickets to his mom and take the money instead, but my dad said that his friends didn't have to give him money. They could just let him take his tickets.

He told me that he used to be a broke college student, and his friends would give him money or buy him food and drinks all the time. They didn't charge him, so he never had to pay. But he told me that it was better for him to buy his own food, so he had the money to pay if they didn't give it to him. It was better for him to be the one who buys the expensive coffee.
