There is an app that some prisons use called JPay where prisoners can buy an electronic messaging device for hundreds of dollars (most of which is profit for the company) and pay 40 cents a message to message someone who has JPay on the outside.

As I study prison abolition I've realized a new app that uses just real regular email on the outside and the prison mail service to send an email to the prison with your message could be a lot cheaper and more accessible. The email on the outside would require having an account, but you could have the message go straight to the digital platform for the prisoner even if they are not registered for it yet. This could be a little step towards getting prisoners closer to tech even if they dont want to buy an expensive tablet.

The app could even allow you to send multiple messages at once and then save them on the prisoner platform if they log in at a later time, so you could customize the messages to the people they are going to and send them all at once.

To make it more accessible and to comply with prisons' period for sending mail, you could even allow the user to schedule all their messages and they could be sent out at the same time once a day.

The app could run off ads and a small fee for the prisoner to get the message.

I think one of the biggest successes to JPay was their newsletter where they allow prisoners to send their writing to be published for free. That could be recreated with the app, with the prisoners and outside people who work on it getting any profits.

Is this something that someone might work on?
