Why are there so many open jobs that nobody wants?

I'm from Canada so most of the examples I use below will be Canadian cities, but I think the issue applies across NA.<br><br>I work at a large bakery in Toronto. We regularly don't have enough people to cover a shift, because it is so difficult to hire. We pay $18/hour plus benefits, which is very competitive, but we keep losing staff. The thing is, the work isn't hard and the conditions aren't bad. We're not a sweatshop. If you apply for the job and show up for your interview on time, we'll hire you. I think a lot of people don't apply because they know they won't actually show up for their shift.<br><br>I mostly blame universal basic income and CERB. When the pandemic first began and everything was shut down, I understood the need for financial support. But now that things are reopened and businesses are operating at nearly 100% capacity, it's stupid that people who can't find work can just exist on government handouts. It sucks not having a lot of money, but it sucks even more not having a job.<br><br>It's totally bizarre to me how many jobs are available right now and how nobody wants them. I heard on the radio today that 1/3 of McDonald's restaurants in BC and Alberta have reduced their hours because they don't have enough staff. This is happening at fast food restaurants across the country. I heard one McDonald's was paying $19 an hour and still couldn't find workers.<br><br>Every day I see tens of thousands of unfilled listings on indeed and LinkedIn. I'm glad people have options, but it sucks as a business owner to not be able to find workers.<br><br>I really don't know how this became a political issue, but I think we need to allow more immigrants into the country.
