Did the traditional costumes around the world used to be similar to this?

I'm around 15 years old and I noticed when looking at traditional costumes around the world, they tend to have brightly colored clothing, white shirt with sometimes embroidery, really long skirts that are like a bell, and a big wide brim hat to keep the sun out. I looked up different countries' traditional costumes and I noticed when they were taken in the past, like 100 years ago, they kind of look like what I described around the world. I also noticed when they were modernized they were darker and more simple and modern. I know it's not everywhere, but I sometimes notice really old pictures of traditional costumes from different countries having bright colors and the big wide brim hats. <br><br>I guess my question is, did people in the past wear those kind of things in their day to day lives or were they only saved for show like a wedding or something?
