Shit Indians do that I, as a Pakistani, do not understand.

*Let me preface by saying that I am a recent uni graduate and have spent most of my life in South East Asia. I am not a rightist or Islamist. I am simply a Pakistani who, over time, has developed a few questions.*

*This is by no means intended to offend anyone or spark a debate. Whatever answer that I get, I will accept.*

1) Why do you hate India so much?

*No, this is not trolling nor am I being sarcastic. I don't really understand why many Pakistanis seem to be so fixated on India. Many seem more passionate about Pakistan-India cricket rivalry than they are in supporting their own country. Pakistan has been gifted with amazing natural beauty and resources. I just don't get it.*

2) Why do you insist on calling us cousins?

*I'm not sure how much of it is real and how much of it is fake, but it seems like many Pakistanis genuinely refer to us as cousins. To my understanding, there was a civil war and we separated. That's it. You have your own nation. So do we. I don't feel any special affinity towards Pakistan or anything Pakistani, anymore than I do towards Egypt or Indonesia or Turkey for that matter.*

3) How do you have such high expectations for Pakistan?

*No, this is not being critical. As an outsider, I do not have access to Pakistan. But from what I have seen, it seems like many Pakistanis expect to live in a just society, with good infrastructures and a strong democracy and many seem to take it for granted. As a third worlder living in a less developed country, I do not have the luxury of having any such expectations. I think this is a good thing and I wish more Pakistanis recognised this.*

4) Why do you keep comparing things to India?

*To me, this is like Egyptians comparing themselves to the Water People or the Iraqis comparing themselves to the Romans. I do not have any sort of cultural, historical or social connection with modern India. Many Pakistanis seem to compare everything to India, as if it matters. A better comparison would be with Turkey or Malaysia who are also more or less secular democracies in Muslim majority countries. They are more or less of a similar size and have a similar starting position.*

5) Why do you trust your politicians?

*I'm not sure if many Pakistanis really do, but from what I see, they have a lot of faith in their politicians and the institutions. As an outsider, Pakistani politicians seem to be exactly the same as those anywhere else. Greedy, administratively ineffective, corrupt, selfish and incompetent. What makes you have faith in them?*

6) How is your military so powerful?

*I have nothing but absolute respect for Pakistan. I'm not trying to undermine your achievement. But I simply don't understand how Pakistan has such a powerful military when they don't really seem to have the budget or the capacity to do so. The military seems to have a disproportionate amount of power. I simply don't understand how they manage to do so much with so little.*

7) Why do you care so much about Kashmir?

*I'm not going to go into the politics. It just seems like a constant point of contention for many Pakistanis. They seem to take it personally. I get that many Pakistanis who grew up in the 80's and 90's had Kashmir drummed into them. I simply don't understand why so many still care so much.*

*Again, let me emphasise that these are genuine questions. Many Pakistanis that I have met have been perfectly nice and decent. I am curious to understand your perspective.*
