I used to be naive about hitch-hiking and this is what happened

I used to hitch-hike a lot in my teen years, especially in Greece, as I was relatively small and lean. It’s also a safe country, at least in general. To be frank I never really had any bad experiences either. So, I found myself alone standing next to a busy road in Southern Greece; as you can imagine there were some tourists driving by as well.

This guy stopped for me. He was probably in his mid-50s, from the UK, spoke fluent Greek, and, as we soon found out, he had lived in this region for a couple of years.

I’m not gonna lie, he seemed nice enough, but I was totally naive back then. I had already told him that I was alone, as he was curious as to what I was doing on my own at the age of 16.
He, on the other hand, was traveling alone and for some reason was driving a right-hand drive car for the Greek roads.

He told me that he was going north, as I wished to head south, and he told me that he knew where I was heading.
He told me that if I came with him he’d help me move my bag, and that he’d drive me to my original destination without a hitch of a problem.

He then told me that it was hard find rides if you’re alone, especially in this time of the day, and so he also offered to drive me up north, find a place to sleep for the night and drive me back in the morning.
I don’t know what, but something seemed off and something inside me whispered to me to walk away. I actually asked him, “what’s in it for you?” He seemed rather taken aback, and told me that he wasn’t going to harm me in any way.
He also added that he just wanted to keep himself company as he was on a long drive. I told him that I was going to have to decline, and that he should be on his way.

He was kinda agitated, but he did leave, only after half an hour. I don’t know what this guy’s intentions were towards me exactly. I don’t want to know. But it was the first time that I had sensed this kind of vibe from a person I had never met.

So, to summarize: We let’s not meet. And if you’re relatively young, it’s not worth the risk for something that doesn’t feel right.
