So I walk into my local pharmacy to pick up a prescription, and I see a man in a shirt, tie, and blazer standing behind the counter. He's helping a woman pick out some shampoo.

He finishes helping her, and he asks me, "May I help you?"

I hand him my slip and say, "I'm here to pick up my prescription. My insurance requires that I pay 50% copay, and my script costs $40, so I need to pay $20."

He says, "I need to see your ID."

I give him my ID and he says, "Thank you. That'll be $30."

I ask him, "I'm sorry? What do you mean it's $30? Why are you charging me a $10 processing fee?"

He says, "You haven't paid your annual fee, so it's a processing fee."

I say, "Actually, I did pay my fee in January, so I should not have a processing fee, and it's only Feburary."

He insists that I did not pay the fee, so I ask him to look it up again.

He does, and after a few minutes, he comes back and says, "Actually, it looks like you did pay your fee, so I'll waive the processing fee, but you still have to pay $30."

I ask him, "Why am I being charged more than the quoted price of $40?"

He says, "That's the price if you pay cash."

I say, "I am paying cash."

He says, "That's not what I mean. If you pay cash up front, you don't have to use your insurance, and it's cheaper."

I pull out my wallet and pull out $20.

I say, "I'll have you know that this is cash."

He looks at the money, and then he looks back up at me and says, "That's fine. Do you want to pay cash up front and not pay with your card and not use your insurance?"

I say, "No. I would like to pay my quoted 50% copay rate."

He kind of looks at me weird and then says, "Fine. I'll honor it."

I hand him my card, he processes the payment, he hands me my receipt, and then hands me my prescription.

I take my stuff and thank him, and as I walk away, he calls out after me, "Have a nice day, maam!"

And I say, "No. You're going to have a bad day. I'm going to call your boss, report you, and make sure you get fired."

I walk out of the pharmacy, and I realize that my prescription bottle says "Cash Price $20" on it, so I call corporate and tell them that their employee is price gouging, intentionally misrepresenting prices to customers, and I gave them the names of everyone involved.

The man on the phone was very nice and apologized profusely. He said he would look into it, and it would more than likely result in termination because they've been cracking down on price gouging lately.

I tell him thank you and I hang up.

Someone in the comments asked if it was just a mistake.

I don't think it was a mistake because I give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but 1. He was working in the pharmacy for at least 6 months because I recognized his face, so he would know how the copay works and 2. When I pointed out the cash price on the bottle, he got very quiet.

Now, I know that pharmacists aren't paid much, but at the same time, you're in a position of authority and people trust you with their health, so you shouldn't be shady or shady or unscrupulous towards patients.

So long story short, make sure to always double check your quotes because small small men in ties will try to take advantage of you.
