Genuinely curious: What do teachers think about chatGPT?

I'm not a teacher, I'm a software developer working in AI, and the chatGPT release has obviously been a big topic for me, professionally and academically. It seems to be a tipping point for AI in how it interacts with humanity. I'm not sure we can go back now.

I notice there is a lot of freaking out from teachers, but I can also understand why. My mom was a high school English teacher for a very long time, and she's very against AI.

When I was in high school (not that long ago, I'm 22 with some university) I remember that when we did essays and stuff, the rubric was always so strict that it was hard for me to actually write about what I wanted to or explore any idea I wanted to. It was more about writing the teacher's essay and following their rubric.

I can understand that teachers don't want to write the rubric and have chatGPT spew out whatever the rubric is asking for. But also, do we just ban pens and pencils next because they help the learner with drawing and writing? I'm just curious as to what teachers think is the best approach to this new technology.

My opinion is that the approach should be to move away from how we have been using rubrics and essays for the past 100 years and start using AI to teach our kids the proper way to integrate AI in their lives in the future. I understand that's not a small ask and it's probably a lot of work, but I feel like it's what we should be pushing for.

The first thing I did was, when I started university, I wrote an essay on my own, then ran it through a grammar and plagiarism checker so that I could avoid the annoying emails the profs send out. Then now with chatGPT, I do that same thing, I write it myself, then have chatGPT give me an edited version of it. Then I take the chatGPT version and rewrite it in my own words. It feels to me like learning to write an essay in a new language. This is what I think should also happen in schools, teach kids how to use AI as a tool and to learn to not rely 100% on the AI, use common sense and critical thinking.

Anyways, I know I'm not a teacher so I don't know much about the teaching experience, I just wanted to know what teachers think about it and what teachers think should happen.
