Can I be in a socialist economy and still be wealthy?

I always thought that socialism is like... everyone is working for the state and everyone gets a stipend for food etc. Now after learning more, I think it's more of a tax on private corporations and the money being taxed is used for the welfare of the state. I'm not sure tho.
