You can be a really nice person, and also be guilty of sexual assault

Hi. I’m a criminal defense attorney. I have a confession to make, and I’m sure there will be a lot of downvotes coming my way and maybe even a referral to the Bar for this.

I’ve represented more than 10 men who I am completely convinced raped women (and in some cases, put them on the stand and had them cry knowing full well that their father or brother or cousin or whatever was sexually abusing them for years).

I’ve convinced juries to acquit them because I am a good lawyer, and now these men are out free. I know for a fact that a few of them went on to commit more crimes and one is in prison right now for a completely unrelated kidnapping and rape charge. He’s serving life without parole.

I was also a prosecutor for three years, and I lost two cases involving rape because the evidence was too circumstantial and in one case, the alleged victim admitted she was drunk and couldn’t remember anything.

I know there was enough evidence to convict both men, and I fully expect them to commit similar crimes in the future. One has already been arrested for sexual assault at least twice since but both cases got dismissed because the alleged victims ended up not reporting the crime to the police (the police arrested him because they had probable cause to, but the alleged victims when to the ER for treatment instead of filing a report). They likely didn’t want to be called a liar or a slut or a whore or have their private lives paraded on social media, so they just let it go and moved on with their lives.

Now for the premise: It seems like everyone is of the opinion that if someone is accused of sexual assault, they are automatically guilty. I don’t make my living on popular opinions, folks. Welcome to the real world, where you get the justice you can afford, and sometimes that justice is life-shattering.

Edit: To those of you saying that OJ was obviously guilty, please read Vincent Bugliosi’s book Outrage. Not only was the evidence against OJ very circumstantial and not only could I have easily gotten an acquittal as his lawyer, but Cochran, Shapiro, and Bailey could have gotten a conviction if they tried hard enough. Seriously, read Outrage. Bugliosi is fantastic and it’s a really great read.

Also to the person who said I should be disbarred for this, you are in the wrong. I am required to zealously defend all my clients, and that includes rapists.
