Why do I need to "respect my elders"?

I'm 22, and I've always felt this certain pressure to show some kind of blind respect to older people simply because they're older than me.

I'm a man of respect, I'm kind and courteous, I'm polite, I listen, I'm humble, I'm as down to earth as they come. However, I don't believe in bowing down to people just because they're older and born out of a different generation.

I think anyone regardless of their age is entitled to the same amount of respect as anyone else. It's wrong to get angry with younger people for correcting or disagreeing with certain things. It's wrong to assume your view of the world is more accurate than anyone else's view. It's wrong to attempt to make someone feel inferior and belittled and try to make them feel stupid just because you're older.

You don't have to be young to be ignorant, just as you don't have to be old to be wise.

Edit: I get the 'respect your elders' thing for when you're a child. It's a sensible way to teach discipline without beating them or scaring them (as kids aren't fully capable of understanding the world as adults are). I barely had this as a child, but I've always wondered about what point in life does the 'respect for elders' stop making sense.
