I've come to this realization after observing the world for a few years. The majority of people are inherently selfish and they can't change. A lot of the time we can be tricked into thinking they're not because they can be manipulative. They'll be nice to you and can make you think they actually care and are acting out of kindness but in reality they're just doing it for different reasons. One of the biggest reasons is because they want to be reciprocated. This is why people keep track of who owes them what and they can be very eager to bring it up when it comes to money or anything of value. If you help someone with something they're guaranteed to bring it up when they need help with something and that's your cue to help them. You can't say no. If you do they'll start bringing up what you owe them in one way or another and they'll act like they were wronged.

In any case, selfish people don't actually care about others, they don't act out of kindness and they can't change. The majority of people are this way and it's what separates them from people that are actually selfless.
