Little background:

The British East India Company was chartered by the British Crown in 1600. In 1757 they conquered a part of India and established their rule. Over the course of a century and a half, they extended their rule over the entire country, and at a point the British East India Company was collecting taxes, waging wars, administering an army and its own civil service and issuing its own coins. There was a British Parliament back in England which had very little control over the East India Company during the 18th and early 19th century, and the company was essentially a sovereign state in its own right.

In 1857 the Indian Rebellion of 1857 occurred, with Indian soldiers in the East India Company army rising up against their officers and establishing their own rule in many parts of the country. The British Crown ultimately regained control over the country, but the East India Company was disbanded and its powers were transferred directly to the British Crown in 1858.

It was at this point, under the British Crown, that the British Raj was established, and India was put under direct British Rule, ending the rule of the East India Company.

At this time, Queen Victoria was monarch and so the title of "Empress of India" was also added to her list of titles. The title of Emperor of India would then be held by her successors until India gained independence in 1947.

Edit: Precision - The British East India Company was disbanded in 1874.
