Who else has to be very careful about what they say in class?

I teach in a very very conservative district. It’s so hard to say anything about anything that goes on in the news because I don’t want to be seen as biased.

Like tonight my government students are discussing whether or not we should require government IDs to vote, I want to point out the very real instances of voter fraud (I think there were about 200 in the last election?) and compare that to the women who died from illegal abortions. But I can’t.

I work hard to make sure I am being very fair, and I want the students to see both sides, but it gets tough when I know people around here to have a very narrow view and would go after me if they thought I was being “liberal”.

I am very glad that I am being extra careful now, because today the students I had last year are coming back, and a lot of them are now in honors classes. And a lot of times the students from the last class will slip in phrases or sentences that I used to get them to remember things that we were discussing.
