Amid efforts to limit foreign influence and boost national security, Russia has introduced a law that requires all major tech companies to store Russians' personal data within the nation's borders. This move, which is scheduled to be enforced from January 2025, was recently approved by President Vladimir Putin.

The law applies to companies handling the personal data of over 100,000 Russian citizens. Such companies must now either establish local offices or hire a designated representative in the country. In addition, they are required to register their data processing activities with the Russian government and adhere to both Russian and international data protection legislation.

Failure to comply with this new law can lead to significant penalties, including fines and temporary or permanent suspension from Russia's telecommunications market. The law aims to strengthen Russia's oversight of tech companies and ensure that data is secured domestically, thus reducing reliance on foreign data storage solutions.

#Tech #Data #Russia #Regulation #Security
