Meghalaya, India: Local politician allows his wife to die for a kidney transplant instead of saving her with his own kidney to keep it available for his son-in-law.

After Indian politician Kedar Singh Firoze refused to donate a kidney to save his wife’s life because he said he needed to keep it available for his son-in-law, the country’s government has launched a probe into the matter. Kedar Singh Firoze is a local politician from the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya.<br><br>Hospital records obtained by CNN, from sources close to the matter, reveal that Firoze’s wife was admitted to a hospital in Delhi in March 2023 where she died after refusing dialysis, an essential procedure for kidney failure. The records show that the hospital’s doctors had urged Firoze to donate one of his kidneys to save his wife but he refused, saying he wanted to keep it available for his son-in-law.<br><br>“My second son wants to become a doctor and for that he needs to pass an examination and for the second stage of the examination, a medical examination is required,” he wrote in a statement obtained by CNN, adding that he is worried his son-in-law may fail the medical test needed for the exam because he suffers from a kidney issue. As such, he refused to donate his own kidney to save his wife.<br><br>Firoze’s comments sparked widespread outrage in India. The country’s top opposition leader on Monday called for Firoze to be charged for the crime of murder.<br><br>“Is saving his son-in-law’s career more important than saving his wife’s life?” CNN quoted Rahul Gandhi, an opposition leader, as saying.
