We, the women, won’t have to take up arms to destroy the patriarchy. And it will be too late for the men to understand what happened.

I see signs of it everywhere. A world where women are free from the patriarchy’s grip, free to be who we are and to grow and flourish, while the men are left to slowly starve in the ruins of their own making.

Women are out-educating men at increasingly higher rates. Women are out-competing men and taking jobs in industries which the patriarchy considers to be masculine. Women are increasingly better educated, better read, more widely travelled, better paid, and more fulfilled than men.

The pandemia is catalyzing women’s progress even further, as we are managing to work from home, look after the kids, and keep the house in order, without losing our jobs or our minds. While men are trying to get to grips with the fact their usual hiding places, such as the pub and the gym, are off-limits.

The patriarchy is starting to be seen for what it is. Women are pointing out the ridiculousness of men’s claims to power, and the cruelty and destructiveness of the patriarchy. And more and more women are calling out the patriarchy and rejecting it.

And the men…? The men are unaware of what is happening to them. They are not protecting themselves from their own downfall. They are still too busy trying to subdue us, and they can’t see that, very slowly, they are losing the war they have waged against us for millennia.

I can’t say I feel sorry for the men. The patriarchy has to end. It has to end because it is destroying the planet and it is destroying us. It is holding us back and it won’t let us grow. It is killing us, and it will kill us all if we don’t stop it. And the only way to stop it is to destroy it.

So this is how the patriarchy will end. Not because we, the women, take up arms and go to war with the men. Not because we create a matriarchy which will dominate the men in the same way that the patriarchy has dominated us. But because we, the women, will outcompete the men and outgrow the patriarchy, and we will leave the men behind. We will be so much better educated, and so much better read, and so much wiser and more fulfilled, that the men and their patriarchy will simply be left in the dust.

And the men will look back on this time, a time when we were still with them, a time when we were married to them, lovers of them, friends of them, daughters of them, mothers of them, sisters of them, a time when we were still a part of their world, a time when they still had a chance to change things and make amends, they will look back on this time and they will wonder what hit them. They will look around at a world that has changed beyond all recognition, and they will wonder where it all went wrong.

And sometimes, women passing by will hear the men’s despairing cries, and we won’t even turn to look. We will be too busy building our own world to care.
