My kitten is a witch.

That's not a metaphor. I know that some people talk about their pets like they are human, as if they think that saying "Mittens is a little witch" is something you should want to hear. My cat, on the other hand, is a very real witch, with very real magic.

The stories that I'm about to tell, they're all true. I know that it sounds crazy, but I've seen her multiply catnip, turn pieces of string into frogs, and even levitate above her food dish. At the time, I thought it was cute. Now, I'm not so sure.

About a week ago, my cat, Poppy, cast a spell on me. We were in the living room at the time, sitting on the couch together and looking at one of my textbooks. I'm in law school, and she loves to sit with me while I read. She'll rub her head against the pages, purring loudly, and nuzzle my hand until I pet her.

I'm not sure what made me look at her at the time. I usually ignore her while I'm studying, giving her just enough attention to satisfy her. They say that cats are good companions for the lonely, but they're not good friends for the busy. This time, however, the hair on the back of my neck stood up, and I looked.

That's when I saw it. Poppy was staring at me, her eyes wide and unblinking, and her mouth was moving. She was chanting. I froze, unsure of what to do, and watched in horror as a warm green light began to emanate from her fur. The air around us seemed to shimmer and the hair on my arms stood up, responding to some unseen static.

I tried to stand up, but my body was heavy. I tried to call out, but my voice was hoarse. My cat was turning me into something, and the last thing I remember from my life as a human is the sensation of falling.

I woke up in the litterbox. My front half was covered in sand, and my body hurt all over. My first thought was that I had been in an accident. My second was that something was wrong with my eyes. Everything looked different. The colors around me were muted, and the shapes seemed off. The box that I was in was huge, and the granola the filled it smelled like sand.

It wasn't until I saw my reflection in a ball of water that I realized that I was a cat. My memories came flooding back, and I remembered Poppy. Her spell had worked. I was a housecat.

I've spent the last few days trying to wrap my head around my new existence. I've learned to walk, to hunt, and to use my new senses. My whiskers are super sensitive, my ears can hear everything, and my tongue is like sandpaper.

I'm still adjusting to my new senses, and to a world filled with monsters. The shower is a beast that hides in the bathroom. The toilet hisses like a snake. The bathtub is where giants come to drown. The vacuum is a goblin that will suck up anything smaller than it.

The house is a scary place, but I've learned to navigate it. My biggest problem is food. As a human, I had no idea how hard it was for cats to eat. My teeth are razor sharp, my jaws are powerful, but my hands are like useless clubs. I can't open anything.

I've learned to eat like a dog. When the humans are gone, I go into the kitchen and shove my whole head into a bag of cat food. I chomp down with my teeth, and the kibble spills all over the floor. I eat as much as I can, and then I run away before anyone can see me.

I'm a messy eater. The humans have started to notice. I've seen the way that they look at each other. I've heard their conversations. They're starting to suspect that something is wrong with Mittens, their other cat. She's the one that they think has been eating all of the food.

I need to find my cat. If Mittens gets in trouble, I'll have to defend her. I'll be sent outside, where I'll starve to death or get run over by a car. I have to find my cat, or my life will be over.

That's why I'm asking for your help. Internet, how do I (23F) break the curse that has turned me (a former human) into a housecat?
