Before you start, this isn't meant as an attack on anyone's political beliefs or as a mean-spirited attack on gun owners. I know a lot of you are staunchly against any gun regulations and i'm not trying to pick a fight about it.

I'm interested in the hypothetical. /c/guns didn't exist in 1930, but if it DID, how would you react to the news that the Thompson submachine gun had been banned, and that the National Firearms Act had been passed, making shotguns and rifles with barrels under 18 inches long illegal?

Would you scoff at the notion, calling it "unheard of" and claiming that there was no possible way the federal government could legally do such a thing, and that it was unconstitutional and would never hold up to scrutiny? Would you claim that the so called "gangster's gun" ban was a "slippery slope" leading to the ban of all guns?

Would you scoff at the notion of the government simultaneously adding a tax and licensing to the sale of automatic firearms and suppressors? Would you tell people to not worry about it because "we don't want those weapons anyway, and if you really must have one you can just buy the stamp / license to buy one."

Would you not hear people when they warn you that the precedent the government is setting here will lead to more gun control in the future, and that it opens the door to the government banning even MORE guns? Would you push back when people tried to warn you that it was a bad idea to so readily let the government infringe upon your right to bear arms, by allowing them to outlaw certain guns, tax and license the sale of others, and that it would only end badly for gun owners in the future?

Would you tout that the gangster's gun ban and the NFA were necessary to keep the Tommy Gun and short-barreled shotguns out of the hands of "gangsters" and that the law is simultaneously "common sense" AND that it "doesn't go far enough"?

How would you react if someone had come forward and said that in 100 years, a ban on magazines holding greater than 10 rounds would be the gold standard, along with a ban on certain semi-auto weapons, and a national registry of all firearms owners, along with licensing to purchase a firearm, and a waiting period to purchase a firearm after getting the license?

Would you think it was crazy, and that the government would never get away with it?

Because that's exactly what happened.

The government DID ban "gangster guns", and now the idea of banning semi-auto weapons is a common discussion, and many states have enacted magazine capacity limits.

The government DID ban short-barreled shotguns, and now there is a tax on short-barreled rifles, along with a license to purchase one.

No, I'm not saying that it's the fault of ONE chamber, or ONE group of people. I'm just saying, be wary of what the government is allowed to do, because if you let them infringe on your rights elsewhere, they WILL find a way to infringe on them EVERYWHERE.
