My cousin has been very fortunate to get a scholarship to study abroad and is currently in Israel (she’s Palestinian by the way) and has been disclosing to me her observations. Ok so she’s been there for 3 months now and she says she has enjoyed the time she’s spent there so far. She told me she doesn’t speak Hebrew but everyone knows Arabic so it’s helped her a lot. She said a lot of Israelis speak both Arabic and Hebrew. She said when she was buying groceries a woman helped her carry everything to her car and invited her to her house for iftar the next day (she’s Muslim).

For work she has to be at the tram stop everyday at a certain time and a kind Israeli woman always comes and talks to her and helps her with the bus fare everyday. Her colleagues and professors are all very nice to her. She said they all ask her about Palestine a lot and whether she likes Israel.

She told me the food is really really good and she’s never eaten such good food in her life. She told me she had one weird experience where a guy stopped her and said Palestinians can’t enter certain places. But she told him she was Jordanian and he let her go. That’s the only bad experience she’s had so far.

She’s also found it weird that people are very open with their political views and she told me that a lot of Israelis hate Netanyahu. She’s travelling across Israel to enjoy the sights and has said that Haifa and Tel Aviv are so beautiful.

I’m from the Middle East myself and we were always taught to never set foot in Israel and to never befriend an Israeli person. But my cousin’s experiences there have been great. I just wanted to share.
