Why doesn't the government tax us if they can just print money?

Because i understand the economy. What I don't understand is that if the government can print the money, why don't they just keep printing it, and then tax us for it. They don't need to spend it. They can just print the money, and then tax us for it. They would essentially be able to have infinite money this way.
