Apple’s augmented reality ambitions are reportedly nearing reality with the tech giant expected to release its first product next year.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to release its first mixed reality glasses in 2024, followed by its first full augmented reality glasses in 2030.

Apple has reportedly been working on AR and MR technology for several years now, and we’ve seen a lot of rumors about such a product in recent years. This report sheds a bit more light on what we might expect from Apple’s early AR and MR products.

The first piece of hardware is the mixed reality (MR) glasses. Apple is said to be working on MR glasses that will have a combination of virtual and augmented reality capabilities. These glasses might allow you to play virtual reality games, but they may also offer a heads-up display for navigating the world in real life.

As for AR glasses, Apple is said to be working on something similar to Google Glass, but perhaps a more full-fledged AR experience. The tech company is reportedly planning to release such glasses in 2030, but it apparently wants to make these glasses a new form factor, and not just a smartphone that you can put on your face.

These AR glasses may allow you to interact with virtual objects in the real world, and maybe you’ll even be able to control them with gestures.

Apple is said to be working on its own AR software as well, and we’ve seen a bit of that software before. In 2023, Apple showed off a live demo of something called ARKit, which is an augmented reality platform for developers.

Apple has not confirmed any of the details in this report, but we expect to hear more about its augmented reality ambitions at WWDC next month.

The tech giant is also said to be working on its own chips for its AR glasses. The company’s M2 chip is said to be used in the first MR glasses, while the AR glasses might run on the M5 chip.

The M5 chip is not expected to be released until 2026-2027, which fits the timeline that Bloomberg is reporting.

Apple is said to be working on a lot of different hardware, including new Mac computers, iPads, and even a bespoke display for the MR glasses.

The tech giant is also said to be working on new software for its AR/ MR glasses, including something called iGlasses, which will apparently be the primary UI for the glasses.

While Apple has not confirmed any of the details in this report, the tech giant did release a very interesting statement earlier this week.

The company said that it “may be introducing a new category very soon,” which could be referring to AR or MR glasses.

I don’t think Apple is going to reveal anything about its AR or MR ambitions at this year’s WWDC, but I think we will see more of the ARKit platform and hear more about the company’s AR-focused plans.

WWDC is a developer conference, after all, so Apple is likely going to focus primarily on software. However, the tech giant could give us a glimpse into what is coming down the line, especially if AR/ MR is such a key part of its future.

The Bloomberg report paints a clear picture of what we might expect from Apple’s first AR and MR products, and we’re very excited about what the future may hold.

While we have seen little bits of AR tech in the past, Apple was one of the first tech giants to truly go all-in on AR.

The tech giant has been working on AR software and hardware for many years, and the company reportedly has thousands of engineers working on its AR efforts.

This report from Bloomberg suggests that Apple’s AR efforts are starting to bear fruit, and we might not have to wait too much longer to see the company’s first AR/ MR products.

Apple reportedly wants to release mixed reality glasses by 2024 and full augmented reality glasses by 2030 (msn.com)
