Hello Everyone, I've been itching to post up something like this for a while and I thought it was about time I did. Recently I listened to a podcast that really got me thinking about my future and how I'll pay for it. Apparently the American Universities had seen an overall 1,375% increase in price since 1978. This really got me thinking and I started making some estimates and as I did I realized that with the American Universities' inflated prices, the average millennial will have to work around 54,576 hours to pay for 4 years of school. This is roughly equivalent to working around 6.2 years with no pay just to pay for college. Now, according to Wikipedia, the transatlantic slave trade was around 30 years of work with no pay for the average slave. As you can see in the title, I believe that going to University is morally equivalent to slavery. I understand that though Universities are expensive, they aren't a common thing and that they don't go out and kidnap people to make them work. However, it is the morally equivalent of American Universities to hold people hostage and make them work an extra 6 years just to get a chance. It's the same thing.

Now I know that Universities are supposed to make a profit and have to pay people but I will say that I have done my research and found that the average American University will end up with a profit. When it comes to schooling, we should be trying to give everyone an opportunity, not just those who have the money to do so. As the millennial person I am, I do believe that everyone should have a chance to go to University. Everyone should have the chance to go and learn regardless of what they have in the bank. Everyone should be treated equally.

I'm looking for the same thing you're all looking for; a change in my view. I would love to hear what you have to day and I really hope you can make me see the arena in a different light.

Thanks everyone, have a great day.

Edit: American Universities' do appear to have a large student debt crisis, this is why I did not include other Countries Universities. Apparently the European Universities don't go for the American Universities' business model.

Edit2: I've noticed some people are confused, I did not mean that the Universities are like the traditional slavery, it is more of the indentured servitude.

Edit3: I've seen a lot of people saying that I did not do enough research. That is not true, I did do research. I've looked at what makes up the costs of Universities, the profits of Universities, and I've looked at the best Universities in the world. I've done my research, the information is out there and it appears that many Universities make a profit and many are inflated in price.

Edit4: I'm American so I'm sorry if it seems like I'm bashing my own country. I'm not trying to do that, I just see a problem that needs to be addressed.

Edit5: I've been reading your comments and I definitely appreciate everyone who has tried to help. However, I would also ask that you not downvote someone simply for not agreeing with you or me. Let's keep this nice and peaceful. Everyone has different views and we all have the right to express them.

Edit6: I've noticed that a lot of people are making points that while Universities appear to be expensive and are inflated, they are still very cheap for the American Universities. These Universities are supposed to be the worlds greatest Universities yet they also are the most expensive Universities in the world; apparently. I would also ask that everyone look at the world as a whole, not just America. Everyone should be able to go to University, not just the Americans, not just the Europeans, everyone should have the chance to have an education and opportunity.

Edit7: I'm going to make a nice little update for everyone. After reading through all of your comments, I have to say that I came into this post extremely close-minded. I did not think about the bigger picture, I did not see the Universities as businesses, I did not see the pros of them, I had tunnel vision and I apologize. That being said, I did not change my view because you all proved me wrong. I've came to the realization that I already knew I was wrong. I came here today to get everyone's view and I believe I have accomplished that. I've came here today to try and see the world in a different way and I believe I have accomplished that. I have to say that I was very narrow-minded in the beginning and I believe that this exercise was very beneficial. I think everyone should try it once, everyone should try this atleast once. One last thing, I think we can all definitely agree that Universities can be expensive and that many people can not afford it. This is where I believe the American government can step in and make things easier. I believe that the government should help pay for the Universities and help pay for the students to go. I believe that education is vital for us to grow and succeed in the long run. As the millennial I am, I believe that everyone should have an opportunity to go to school and get a good job. I believe that the government should pay for a portion of Universities' costs and let everyone have the opportunity to go. As I said, this exercise was beneficial and I appreciate everyone's comments.

Edit8: As much as it would appear so, I am not American. I was born in Eastern Europe and I moved to North America. I do not believe that my University is slavery but I do realize that the American Universities do have a problem. I do believe that the American Universities appear to be overpriced and are inflated. As I said earlier, they are the most expensive Universities in the world and they are definitely not the best Universities in the world.

Edit9: Alright everyone, I believe you've said enough. Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate the time you took out of your day to comment. I've came to the realization that I was very narrow-minded and close-minded when I first posted this. I've also came to the realization that I came into this post already knowing I was wrong. I already knew that Universities are vital to society and that they are not like slavery. Universities are businesses that have to pay people while also giving everyone an opportunity to learn. That being said, I do believe that American Universities are way too expensive and are inflated in price. I do believe that American Universities appear to be greedy at times but I also believe that they are vital and needed. Thanks for commenting everyone, I appreciate the time you took out of your day to comment.
