You are a temporal agent, working for an agency that is so secret, it has no name. It does not need one. It has no competition. Its existence is not acknowledged outside of classified circles, and all attempts to look at it closely are dealt with swiftly. Since the agency exists outside of time, it is effectively outside of international law, and anyone in authority would sooner shoot themselves than try to go up against the agency. It is known as the Agency, the Service, or the Corps - depending on which branch you happen to be in.

You work for the Corps. The Corps has the job of making sure the timeline is not interfered with. There are, of course, times when interfering with the timeline is required, but these instances are few and far between, and are heavily regulated by the Council. The Council is a group of twelve temporal agents who have achieved a high level of temporal enlightenment. They are invested with the power to decide the fate of the world - or at least, the course of history. The Council has the job of making the big decisions, decisions which have to be made quickly, and without the luxury of debate.

The Corps has the job of carrying out those decisions. It has the job of protecting the Council. It has the job of policing the timestream. You work for the Corps. You are a member of the Temporal Protection Detail - the TPD. As a member of the TPD, it is your duty to look out for attempts to subvert the timeline. To look out for people who wish to disrupt the course of history.

You are good at your job. You are temporal enlightenment candidate number one. You are the Corps' golden child. The Corps has invested a lot of time in training you, and the Corps does not want anything to happen to you. Which is why you are still alive.

The building you stand in is ablaze. The room you occupy is burning, and you can hear the crackle of the fire as it advances towards you. You are injured, badly so. There is blood everywhere, and you can't tell if any of it is yours. You cling to your injured leg with both arms. Your commanding officer, Captain Perseus, stands over you, and watches as the fire draws closer.

"It's okay, Ed," Captain Perseus said, his voice grim and hard. "You're going to be okay."

"You know me, sir," you replied, wincing in pain. "I can handle a few burns."

"I know you can, Ed. I know you can."

You are Captain Edward Cooper, and you have just uncovered a plot to disrupt the timeline. You have just discovered something big, something that threatens the entire space/time continuum.

"We have to get out of here, sir," you said.

"I know, Ed. Where can we go?"

You didn't answer. You couldn't. The flames crackled. Your leg throbbed in agony.

The temporal protection detail does not tolerate betrayal lightly. Traitors are dealt with swiftly and effectively, and anyone else who knows about the betrayal is dealt with in the same manner. You are in trouble, Perseus. We have to find a way out of this.

"How-How did they get past temporal scans?" You asked, wincing in pain.

"I don't know, Ed. But I intend to find out."

You didn't respond. The flames were getting closer. You wrapped your arms around your injured leg, and winced. The pain was growing worse, and you didn't know how long you could hold on.

The building you stood in was ablaze, the room you occupied was burning, and you could hear the crackle of the fire as it advanced towards you. You are in a lot of trouble.

The Corps is compromised. The Corps cannot be trusted. You are not sure who to turn to. There is only one thing you know for sure.

You're going to be okay.
