I am a self-taught software engineer and I work at a very good company (doing very well financially) in New York. With all the expenses of college, you could buy a $2000 computer, $1000 phone and travel to Europe for a month and still have $15,000 left over to start your career with. It makes no sense to me why you need to go to college. The other good thing is, even if I wanted to I could never go into that kind of debt even if I wanted to.

EDIT: Let me address some common misconceptions here.

1. That I said anyone can do it. You're right, it's not easy. I didn't say it was. I only said that you don't need college to get into this field.

2. That I said that other fields don't require college. You're right, they do. Doesn't change the fact that you don't need college to get into this field.

3. I'm not giving advice on how to get into this field. Just saying you don't need college.

4. I didn't say anything about whether or not I liked my job. Doesn't change the fact that you don't need college.

5. Just because you or someone you know couldn't do it doesn't change the fact that you don't need college.

6. I didn't say that colleges are worthless. They definitely serve a purpose in many fields that require them and in many other ways. What I said was that it isn't necessary for this field.
