Why is there a big deal about the age of the population in Japan? Why would that cause an economic crisis?

In other words, why is the age of the population something to worry about? Older people have lived their lives, they aren't productive anymore. Neither are kids. What matters is the number of working age people. And what would cause this "crisis"? That is the essence of my question.
