I conspired with a guy at the airport to skip his $500 bag fee.

I was in the military and I was traveling home with my husband (also military). We both had large bags and were obviously in uniform. We were going through security and this guy walks by and says hi to us. He asks if we're military police and we say we aren't. He explains his buddy is in a different branch and he says something along the lines of "he's an MP" and that's all I know about the military. It was obviously a silly thing to say and we giggled about it later but we moved on from it.

A few minutes later he comes back to us and he tells us his airline is trying to charge him $500 for a bag he never had a problem with before. It was one of those weekender bags and it was small. It had a strap so they told him it was too big for a carry on and he needed to pay up.

I don't know why he trusted us. Maybe he knew we'd help. Maybe he was just hoping. But we had already put away our boarding passes. I gave him mine and he put it on his bag and gave it to them. He offered to buy mine but I wasn't going to be like "pay me or I'll leave you with a $500 fee." They let it go and the last I heard from him was "you two are the best. Thank you."

Probably one of the best things I've ever done.
