Mark Zuckerberg said Instagram and WhatsApp could be spun off from Facebook if there is a “change in government thinking” about breaking up the company. The CEO of the social media and technology giant made the comments on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in a wide-ranging interview with Andrew Sorkin.

“I think all of these are just hypotheticals that might happen in the future,” he said. “I think probably the right state of thinking for us is to imagine that in future there could potentially be a change in government thinking about whether these things should be split out.”

Zuckerberg said that if there were a change in thinking, Facebook would consider separate future IPOs. “I think that it makes sense, if you imagine going back to the era where having a social network and an app like Instagram were different things, which I think is not really how the world works anymore.”
