I don't know how deeply ingrained in the common consciousness this phrase "You are not your job" is, but I hear it often. It's said by celebrities and by influencers, by gurus and by tik takers. And that's all fine and well, and it's certainly good advice for when you don't like your job but want to feel good about yourself.

But the fact of the matter is that we are all human capital. The skills and work that we bring to our job are what give us the means with which to live, to survive, to grow and prosper. If you want to live, then you need to be employed. And if you want to thrive, then you need to be exceptional in your employment. And if you want to feel fulfilled, then you need to love what you do.

Today, there are about 7.9bn people on this planet. Most of us go through school, and after we graduate, we enter the workforce. When we enter the workforce, we are all thrown into a global competition. The companies we work for are in competition with their competitors, and so we are forced to compete against our colleagues and against other people's colleagues. If you want to succeed in such a world, then you cannot just be good, you cannot just be very good. You need to be the very best. And if you want to be the very best at anything, then you need to want to be the very best at it. You need to love it.

Human societies have been built on division of labour for thousands of years. And now it's a global economy that we live in. Whether you like it or not, we are all cogs in a global machine. And if you don't like it, then go live in the wilderness or in a tribe in the jungle or something. But if you are living in a society, which nearly everyone is, then you are a part of the workforce. You are a part of this global machine. And that means that you are a human capital asset. And like all capital assets, the value of your labour is determined by what you can do and how well you can do it.

And so if you want to be the best, if you want to be exceptional, if you want to be great, then you need to want it. You need to enjoy it. You need to love it. You need to love your job.

**Edit:** Hey guys, thanks for all the upvotes. I understand a lot of you disagree with this, and I'm happy to listen to all your opinions. I'm using the " contestant " method for now, and I'll mark you as contestants if you meet the requirements. If you feel that your comment doesn't meet the requirements but should be marked anyway, please let me know.
