I think AI research will become increasingly secretive as we move closer to AGI. I can see the most eligible research papers getting locked behind paywalls and corporate level secrecy.

The reason would be that whoever creates AGI first will be controlling a superpower. I think the research for AGI will be done by way of collaboration between governments and large AI companies.

Imagine that you are in control of a project that if successful would give you control over the majority of the world’s armed forces and the majority of the capability of the world’s capital. Do you think you’d want to publicly share the results of that research?

We’re moving towards an era where there’s 3-4 companies in AI that have so much more resources than everyone else. We’re also moving towards an era of sinking resumes into a pattern recognition model to hire the next researcher for your company.

The research has to be hidden from the public so that the people aren’t aware of the true nature of the project and so that AGI doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
