I probably shouldn’t have.

I remember standing in the kitchen, next to the sink, and drinking a whole bottle of wine by myself. I don’t even remember what kind it was.

I woke up in the morning with a pounding headache and the taste of barf in the back of my mouth.

I had spent the night on the floor in a strange bedroom, surrounded by expensive looking furniture that I didn’t recognize.

The last thing I remembered was telling a joke and laughing.

I slowly got up and looked around. There was a mirror on the dresser. My hair was a mess, and I was sure that I’d gotten lipstick all over my teeth. I looked down at my clothes and saw that I was wearing some kind of silk dress, but it had stains on it. I remembered now. I had been laughing so hard at a joke that I had a little accident. The wine had splattered on my dress.

I turned and made my way out of the bedroom, looking for someone to help me. I went through a long hallway, past a living room with expensive furniture and up a set of stairs to the second floor. I saw a woman coming out of a bedroom at the other end of the hallway, and I called out to her.

“Hello?” I said.

The woman came over to me and asked, “Are you okay? You look like you’re in a lot of pain.”

“I feel terrible,” I said. “I think I got really drunk last night and I don’t remember what happened.”

The woman took me by the arm and led me down the stairs. “We’ll figure it out,” she said.

We went back into the living room, and I saw a man sitting in a chair and reading a book. “Hello,” he said, looking up at me. “Are you feeling all right?”

“I feel terrible,” I said.

He closed his book and put it on the side table. “Let’s get you into bed,” he said.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“I’m Logan,” he said.

I didn’t know who Logan was, but I felt like I was about to pass out.

He stood up and took my arm, and the woman led me to a bedroom at the end of the hallway. Inside, I saw a beautiful four poster bed. Logan helped me onto the bed, and the woman pulled off my shoes and covered me with a blanket.

“Thank you,” I said.

Logan smiled. “Of course.”

I looked over at the woman, who was now standing next to the bed.

“Wait,” I said. “Who are you?”

The woman sat down on the bed next to me. “My name is Amelia.”

“I don’t remember meeting you last night,” I said.

“We weren’t at the dinner party together,” Amelia said.

I thought about that for a minute. “You’re the First Lady,” I said.

“Yes, I am,” Amelia said.

I sat up in bed and looked at Logan. “And you’re the President,” I said.

“Yes, I am,” Logan said.

I felt my head spinning. The President? Was I dreaming?

“Don’t worry,” Logan said. “We’ll take care of you. Just rest.”

I felt myself being pulled back into bed. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.

I woke up a few days later feeling much better.

When I woke up, Amelia was sitting in a chair next to the bed. She smiled at me when I woke up.

“Hello,” I said.

“Hello,” she replied. “Do you feel okay now?”

“Yes, thank you,” I said.

I looked around the room and realized that I was still in Logan’s bedroom. I had no idea how I’d gotten there or why I was there.

“How did I end up here?” I asked.

“You don’t remember anything?” Amelia asked.

I shook my head. “I remember going to a dinner party with the ladies in the neighborhood. I remember getting drunk and laughing. And then...I don’t know.”

Amelia sighed. “You’ve been here for a few days,” she said.

I sat up in bed and looked at her. “What do you mean?” I asked.

“You were in a car accident,” she said.

I thought about that for a moment. “I was in a car accident?” I asked.

“Yes, you were,” she said. “You were driving home from the dinner party, and your car skidded off the road. You hit a tree, and you lost a lot of blood. We didn’t think you were going to make it.”

I was shocked. “I was going to die?” I asked.

“Yes, you were,” she said.

I couldn’t believe it. I had almost died. I felt a wave of fear wash over me.

“What happened to my son?” I asked.

“You have a son?” Amelia asked.

“Yes,” I said. “I’m pregnant, remember?”

“Well, your son was in the car with you,” Amelia said.

I felt my heart racing. “Is he...is he okay?”

“Yes, he is,” Amelia said. “We took him to the hospital with you and he’s fine.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. My son was okay. “Thank you,” I said. “Thank you for saving his life.”

“I didn’t do anything,” she said. “The doctors took care of him.”

I thought about what had happened. “So...so you’re saying that I was in a car accident, and I almost died, and...what?” I asked.

“I’m afraid that’s not the truth,” she said.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Logan walked into the room. “Hello,” he said.

“Yes?” I asked.

“I think Amelia is trying to say that we didn’t want you to tell anyone what happened last night,” he said.

I looked at him in shock. “You mean that you lied to me?”

“Yes, we did,” he said.

I felt angry. “Why?” I asked.

“Because of your son,” he said.

I looked at Amelia. “My son?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said. “Your son is our son.”

I looked at Logan in confusion. “What do you mean?” I asked.

“Your son is the love child of Logan and me,” Amelia said.

I stared at her in shock. “No,” I said. “That’s not true.”

“Yes, it is,” she said.

I felt like I had hit a brick wall. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“How could you do that to me?” I asked.

I looked at Logan, who was standing in front of me with a serious expression.

“You know that I’m a very busy person,” he said. “I have a lot of responsibilities as the President of the United States.”

I nodded.

“Well, I couldn’t be a father to your son,” he said. “But I did want to be a father to him.”

I felt like I had been punched in the gut. “So you used me to get what you wanted,” I said.

“Yes, I did,” he said. “I wanted to have a son, and you were willing to do whatever it took to have a child.”

I was shocked. “That’s why you came to the dinner party and offered to let me stay at the White House,” I said.

“Yes, I did,” he said.

I felt like I had been manipulated and used by two of the most powerful people in the world.

I was shocked. “So you’ve been lying to me all this time?” I asked.

“Yes, we have,” he said. “We didn’t want you to know the truth.”

I looked at Amelia, who was sitting in a chair next to the bed.

“I’m so sorry,” she said. “I didn’t want you to know the truth either.”

I felt like I had been betrayed by the two most powerful people in the world.

I looked at Logan. “Why did you do this?” I asked.

“I wanted to have a son,” he said. “And I knew that I couldn’t be a father to your son.”

I felt like I had been punched in the gut. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Why didn’t you just adopt a child?” I asked.

“I wanted a child of my own,” he said. “I wanted a child that I could raise myself.”

I felt like I had been used and manipulated by two of the most powerful people in the world.

I looked at Amelia. “Why did you let him do this to me?” I asked.

“I didn’t want you to know the truth,” she said.

I felt like I had been betrayed by the two most powerful people in the world.

I looked at Logan. “Why did you keep me here?” I asked.

“I wanted to keep you here until you were better,” he said. “And I wanted to tell you the truth.”

I felt like I had been kept captive by two of the most powerful people in the world.

I looked at Amelia. “Why didn’t you let me go home?” I asked.

“I didn’t want you to tell anyone the truth,” she said.

I felt like I had been kept captive by two of the most powerful people in the world.

I looked at Logan. “Why did you lie to me?” I asked.

“I didn’t want you to know the truth,” he said
