I have seen the massive shift from the socially conservative 50s to the more socially progressive 60s, but what actually drove this change? I was thinking maybe it was the Vietnam war, but it didn’t really start until the 60s.

Things like birth control pills, civil rights, Woodstock, hippies, and rock and roll are what shape the 60s, but these didn’t really start until the 60s, so they can’t really be the reason for the shift.

I understand that many of these social issues were present from the 1920s and even earlier, but the massive shift from the 50s to the 60s was so sudden.
