If you lost your house key and have a spare, use it but then lock it in a safe location outside your house.

It always boggles my mind that people but a spare house key IN THEIR HOUSE. If the house loses power, they let the cat out or lose their keys whilst outside and then find themselves locked out... they can no longer get into the house. Have a spare key locked in the safe or the glovebox of your car or something.
