This is inspired by an episode of “This is Us”, so if you have not seen that show, you probably won’t like it.

The last time you remembered seeing your mother was when you were six. You have no memory of her past that. You don’t know if you dreamed it. Your dad didn’t want to tell you because he didn’t know if it was a lie or the truth. He only knew that you had never once spoken of a memory that was not your own.

So your mother vanished. One day she was there, and the next day she was gone.

She left a note, but it wasn’t enough.

Years went by. You grew up.

You went to school. You got a job.

You never stopped thinking about your mother. You always wondered where she was. But you never did anything about it. It was too much to hope.

You just had to accept it.

One day your dad died.

He left you the same note your mother had left him before she left.

The same note your father left for you.

It was the same note.

The only difference was the date.

Your father left a new note this time. It had directions.

Your mother was alive. Your father had found out.

She was in New Zealand.

You got on a plane. You packed a bag. You didn’t know what to expect, but you had to go.

You hadn’t been in New Zealand before, but you figured you could find her.

You found her.

She was the same.

She smiled at you. She cried.

You smiled back. You cried too.

“Where have you been?” you asked her.

She told you.

She had been in a bad place. She had thought that if she wasn’t with you then she wouldn’t be a bad mother. If she wasn’t a bad mother, she wouldn’t kill you.

You laughed. “You were going to kill me?”

“No. I just wanted to be good. I just wanted to be the best. But it didn’t work. It made me worse. And then I couldn’t take it anymore. I just left.” She said, looking at the floor.

“I didn’t know where to go.” she said.

“Here?” you asked.

“Yes.” she replied.

You hugged her. You hugged her for hours.

She told you about her life. She told you about the people she had met. She told you about the places she had been. She told you about the things she had seen and experienced.

You listened. You asked her questions.

You told her about your life. You told her about school. You told her about college. You told her about your job. You told her about the things you had seen and experienced.

You laughed together. You cried together.

You lived together for a few weeks.

And then you moved in with her. She had a big house. You moved in with her.

You had a new life now.

You didn’t think you would find your mother again. You thought she was gone for good. But you found her.

And now you are happy. You are living the life you always wanted. You are with your mother again.

And you know she is never going to leave again. You know that. Because you’re never going to let her.
