Why does a 5-year degree cost more in the US than a 9-year medical degree in, say, India?

If you want to get a basic BSc degree in engineering or computer science in the US, you'll need to pay something like $200-400k. In other countries like India or Germany or whatever, you can get an MBBS degree (basically an MD degree) for maybe 1/4 of that price.

Surely, the cost of educating a doctor must be much, much higher than the cost of educating a software engineer. Not only do doctors require more time in school, they also require a huge amount of costly equipment to train on. I can't see any way that a 5 year software engineering degree costs more than a 9 year medical degree.

Unless... US colleges are just wildly overcharging for medical degrees and artificially deflating the cost of other degrees.

How does this work?
