I had no idea that Republicans wanted to ban birth control

I recently learned that Clarence Thomas wants to ban birth control. That being said I also learned that over 86% of Americans are against such a ban. Does that mean that birth control will be banned by Republicans if not than why does Clarence Thomas want it to happen and is it going to happen?
