One day you get a job working for a secret government agency that is bent on proving that supernatural things such as ghosts, demons, and other paranormal phenomena are nothing more than imagination. Your first mission is to go down to Georgia and buy an old mansion because the previous owner died in the house under weird circumstances and the people around him thought the place was cursed. Your bosses believe that if you live in the house for thirty days nothing bad will happen.

You arrive in Georgia and buy the house. You spend the first few days fixing the place up and getting everything the way you like it. Every day you go down in the basement to measure the electromagnetic fields in the air to see if there is anything unusual down there. But day after day they all come back normal. Your first day of work is over and nothing out of the ordinary happened. Your bosses call to congratulate you on a mission well done. You go to bed that night feeling pretty good about yourself.

But the next morning you wake up and realize you're all out of toilet paper. You go down to the storage room to look for a new roll, but they're all boxed up. You find the box and carry it up the stairs, opening it on the way up. As you open the box you hear a loud voice say, in a bored, monotone voice "I told you not to touch that." You look up the stairs to see the previous owner of the house standing on the landing above you.

"Who the hell are you?" you shout back. The man glides down the stairs and walks over to you. He looks like he was a gentleman the height of his prime; he was probably in his fifties when he died. He was very well dressed; he was wearing a three-piece black suit and a white shirt and black tie. At the moment he was in terrible shape; his face was slashed to bits by a hundred tiny knives. His eyes were bleeding and his skin was covered in blood.

"Sorry to throw you into the deep end," said your boss over the phone. "But your next mission is right behind this one." He paused. "You see, we have a problem. One of our high-ranking officials has invested a great deal of money in an afterlife resort, and he wants his money back. The catch is that he died in a plane crash, so we need someone on the ground to gather information so we can figure out a way to get to him."

"You want me to go to heaven and spy on the dead?" I asked incredulously.

"Well, you may not actually be in heaven," he said. "It could just be some sort of near death experience, or a parallel dimension, or something like that. You won't know for sure until you get there and find out."

"I see," I said. "Well, when do I leave?"

"Your flight leaves in an hour," he said. "Don't forget your passport."

"Got it," I said. "One more thing."

"What's that?" he asked.

"What am I supposed to do when I get there?" I asked.

"You'll figure something out," he said.

"Okay," I said. "Got it."

"Good," he said. "You're clear."

I hung up the phone and walked out into the bright sunlight. I had no idea what the afterlife was going to be like, but I knew one thing for sure; I was about to find out.
