Part 2 will be much better than Part 1

I think about this a lot but I’ve started realizing that I’m more excited for Part 2 than I was for Part 1. It’s amazing that Part 1 even came out in the first place, but in terms of actual writing quality and pacing, there’s been a lot of controversy about pacing and writing quality. I think people are overthinking Part 1 a bit and don’t realize that this is actually the first time an anime gets a full 3 season treatment, so we don’t have enough information whether any problems are gonna be addressed or not. One thing I think is certain though is that Part 2, or the second block of episodes of Attack on Titan Season 4, will be much better than Part 1.

With Part 1, MAPPA had to work with some very big challenges, and I think they did a great job, don’t get me wrong. I’ve seen some of the highest quality MAPPA had to offer in Attack on Titan, and I have enough confidence in them that whether they’ll be able to create a consistent quality output is secondary to what we’re gonna get. The problem is that they had to work with 4 years of material of Attack on Titan, and with the way the manga ends, there’s a lot of foreshadowing all over the place that they have to keep track of. I think that’s one of the reasons why Armin’s dream was cut, it’s not really important in the grand scheme of things to watch, and is more so for comedic-relief. I think they also cut Armin’s dream because it was a very one-off thing, and if they needed to cut anything to keep a consistent pace, it would’ve been that.

The biggest problem with Part 1, I find, is the pacing. The pacing is all over the place, going from very fast to very slow. I think the biggest reasons for this is that the opening had to be made, and that took a lot of time. I know that MAPPA has never finished an anime in one sitting before, but that’s because of an opening. They had to work on the opening before they could finish the anime, so I’m not surprised that Rie Matsumoto isn’t in the lineup for Part 2, she’s probably working on the opening.

The second problem, is that they didn’t have the whole manga to work with when they were creating the anime. They likely had to go through the entire manga, make sure that they could track everything, and then start working on a script. I don’t think they could’ve worked on the script without the whole manga, and the manga was still being published when they first started making the anime.

Lastly, I think MAPPA went into this project without any experience with season splits at all. I think they jumped into Attack on Titan without going through any test runs, and so they had to basically feel their way through it. I don’t think going through a test run would’ve helped them in any way, but that’s what I think. I think they need a small project to test it out before going full into the deep end.

I think what’s gonna happen is that for Part 2, MAPPA won’t have any problems with the opening, the pacing, and the length of the anime. It’s gonna be a very self-contained block of anime, so there’s gonna be no need to rush. They already have the whole manga to work with, and most likely have already seen the ending. They can now focus more on the quality of the anime, and how they want to approach this project. They’ll have more time and money to work with, so they won’t have to cut anything out of the manga, and I think they’ll be able to deliver much better writing and pacing for the rest of the season. These are just my thoughts, but I think Part 2 will be much better than Part 1, and that it’ll be something special.
